Star Sapphire Ring
The star sapphire as the name suggests is a sapphire with a star that can be seen when light reflects off the stone. Most star sapphires are oval in shape and cut in the shape of a smooth cabochon. If you own a star sapphire ring you would have noticed by now that whenever you move your hand the star in the sapphire actually moves with the movement of the light. This happens in view of the light reflecting on the inclusions inside the stone. Even among the star sapphires there are shades of color with the darker blue showing the star more clearly. Although we call the darker shade of blue sapphire a black star sapphire, it is just that the blue of the stone is so dark that it looks almost like black but in fact is only a very dark blue.
When we talk about the star sapphire ring, it is obvious there are different qualities even in this very valuable gemstone. If the star is clearly visible in the stone it is regarded as a good quality stone while the quality is even regarded as better if the star is clearly visible in a black sapphire ring. However, it is a difficult task to find a real star sapphire ring where the star is clearly visible and if you do find one, you can be quite sure that it will carry a very high price tag which is normally beyond the likes of you and me. It is possible however, to find a star sapphire ring of moderate quality and price which will show off the star clearly and sharply.
With the popularity of star sapphire rings going up, a famous jeweler some time back, came up with the bright idea of creating a star sapphire with a synthetic star to make it look almost like the real thing. As we know through experience, people can be made to believe anything when it is repeated many times, and in this particular case a highly targeted advertising campaign was launched to introduce this fake gem. By giving the sapphires names of stars, many people were duped into buying the fake machine made sapphire at an exorbitant price not realizing they were being fooled by the advertising which tried to showcase the fake gem as a genuine stone. Before long however, most experts with knowledge of gemology realized the truth and the popularity of the synthetic star sapphire began to fade away.
In later years, after much research was carried out by those who dealt in the world of gems learnt how the star effect came into being, they tried to enhance the appearance of the stone the result of which is the diffused star sapphire. Now the diffused star sapphire is not to be confused with the synthetic man made stone. What makes it more acceptable is the fact that it is made from the genuine stone and can be used in a star sapphire ring to give the same effect as the real stone when the surface of the star is treated and enhanced to give it the look of the genuine gemstone. This treatment luckily, does not damage the stone because sapphires are very hard stones and are second only to diamonds. The other advantage of the diffused star sapphire ring is that the star has more clarity and sharpness than even in the genuine stone which is extremely hard to find these days.
With the cost of the diffused star sapphire ring being much less than the original, it is possible to get a really good looking star sapphire ring made from gold or silver which is as good as it can get; especially when you think that no one other than perhaps a billionaire can afford to buy a genuine star sapphire ring these days, and that too, only if he can find one.
